In 2016 the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium (SCELC) launched a program as part of a North American effort to preserve print monographs and make them available for sharing now and for future generations. Now in its second cohort, SCELC's Shared Print Program numbers 26 libraries that have undergone Collection Data Analysis using OCLC's GreenGlass software to understand the uniqueness and overlap among participants' collections. Comparison with other library groupings has helped to establish a fair retention model that allows libraries to share the responsibility and costs of maintaining print collections and reclaim library space for other purposes. SCELC's is a distributed retention plan that seeks to "Promote broad availability and long-term sustainability of library collections". We are now emphasizing flexibility of participation and exploring methods of gathering resource sharing data to gauge the program's success. Challenges ahead include replacing lost or damaged retentions and transfering a rentention commitment to another partner. Please join us to learn of this successful, budding program.
